Black Voices of Tulare County: Commemorating Allensworth Celebrate Black History Month virtually with the Tulare County Library and The Friends of Allensworth.
Tulare County is home to Allensworth, the only exclusively black community founded in California. Allensworth was founded to help African Americans become empowered and self-sufficient and to start a new life away from the oppression of Jim Crow. In celebration and commemoration of Allensworth the library is hosting a county-wide reading of Allensworth: The Freedom Colony by Alice C. Royal and a read-a-thon of post-civil war historical fiction about the black experience. Readers will receive a free copy of Allensworth: The Freedom Colony while supplies last and be entered into a drawing for a kindle fire by participating in the read-a-thon. Participants will also have the chance to win a Kindle! The virtual program starts on 2/2/2021 and ends on 2/27/2021.
