Although the focus on D&I in law firms has been gaining emphasis over the past few years, the social unrest of 2020 has forced law firms to take increased action. However, law firms have a huge blind spot: most are only focused on lawyer D&I programs, excluding as much as 50% of their talent pool from consideration. The caste-system environment that is inherent in most law firm cultures is not sustainable for firms who wish to achieve success in the future. In September 2020, Calibrate Legal launched a research program, Calibrate ID, with several law firms to measure the diversity of their business services ("non-lawyer") teams. The hypothesis is that there will be, in fact, a large number of employees reporting as diverse in the non-exempt ranks but that we will realize a significant disparity when reviewing data within the exempt/management ranks.
