Socratic Paths: Shakespeare,The Merchant of Venice

Join us Sundays in August for a reading and discussion of The Merchant of Venice. We will ignore the reputation of and controversy over the play (for "all that glitters is not gold") to see for ourselves what story is told about the Christian merchant and his friend, the Jewish money-lender and his daughter, and the judge who appears in the city from a "beautiful mountain" outside the city. We will explore the play's presentation of love and friendship, mercy and justice, and a diverse political community. We will read and discuss one act per week. It is helpful if you have had a chance to read the act for the week, but not necessary; listening to the play or watching one of the movie versions is true to the spirit of a work that is meant to be heard and seen.
