In identity safe classrooms, teachers strive to ensure students’ social identities are an asset rather than a barrier to achievement.  Acknowledging students identities and drawing from their diverse backgrounds as a resource for learning, rather than trying to be colorblind,  coupled with positive relationships, challenging learning opportunities, and anti-racist curriculum help them feel supported and valued.  This book club will offer concrete evidence-based practices, drawing from research on implicit bias, stereotype threat, and its  antidote – identity safety.  We will offer on the ground strategies for in-person and online learning from the books, Identity Safe Classrooms K-5 and Identity Safe Classrooms 6 -12 for educators to promote identity safe antiracist environments, where students of all  backgrounds feel a sense of belonging and become academically successful.
