Words Matter: Language, Bias, and the Importance of Impact over Intent
Effective communications play a critical role in the development, implementation, and managing of diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies - especially in the emotionally charged times of today. And as public relations professionals it is often up to us to say or write "the right things" on behalf of our clients or organizations. Join Cheree Meeks, Ed.D. for an interactive workshop that will define commonly used diversity and inclusion terms, explore implicit bias, and expand on the difference between intent and impact in communication.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Cheree Meeks is the Assistant Dean for Programs, Diversity & Inclusion in the Honors College at the University of Arizona. She leads the Honors College efforts and initiatives to create and foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment in the college. This includes assessment to guide intentional development of programs and experiences to address recruitment, access, support, and retention of underrepresented students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Meeks incorporates equity and inclusion-based student affairs practice to review policies, procedures, and practices that contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Dr. Meeks serves as Chair of the Honors College Diversity and Inclusive Excellence committee and Chair Emerita of the UA Commission on the Status of Women. Dr. Meeks has been the recipient of campus and community awards, including being named 2018 40 Under 40 Woman of the Year, SafeCats Difference of One Award, the Peter Likins Inclusive Excellence Award, and the Black Girl Vibranium Woman of the Year 2018 Award. Dr. Meeks is currently the Vice President of the NAACP Tucson Branch and serves on Tucson Mayor Regina Romero’s Racial Equity and Justice Advisory Council. Dr. Meeks loves the show Law & Order.
