Approximately 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. The cancer types with the highest incidence rates were leukemias (45.7), brain tumors (30.9), and lymphomas (26.2). Based on census data, the Midwest has the second highest incidence rate behind the Northeast. The five year survival rate for cancer patients under 20 is less than 80%. Regardless of where you live, when your child is diagnosed with cancer it likely means extended hospital stays. As such a parent or guardian finds themselves living at the hospital as well for long periods of time and faced with many challenges including isolation, financial hardship and food insecurity. Icon Midwest 2020 will look to find solutions for one or more of these everyday essential problem.
