Thank you all for signing up for this speculative writing workshop! The goal of this program is to imagine or fantasize about new ways of working that exceed the structures we are working within today.
This program was partially inspired by Claire Bishop’s essays Free Your Mind: A Speculative Review of #NewMoMA and MoMA Tour 2064 which are both attached here. During the extended lockdown, ma ma became interested in rethinking what institutions are and do, and saw this as an opportunity to think about how imagining this can catalyse material change.
In preparation for this workshop, we ask that you bring a piece of writing (any length, found or that you have written) that engages in speculative or imaginative thinking. It does not necessarily need to be about the art world. Together, we will read these excerpts as a starting off point for our discussion.
If you have attended a ma ma program before, you know we are very informal and open in terms of content and structure, so please feel free to bring your most speculative ideas as we explore together.
