Thomas Jefferson- A Renaissance Man
Port Jefferson Village was first named Sowasset, a Native American term that could mean either “place of small pines” or “where water opens.” In 1682, Sowasset was renamed “Drowned Meadow,” and it became Port Jefferson in 1836, after Thomas Jefferson, who significantly funded the region. The life of Thomas Jefferson is very interesting because he was not only our 3rd President and 2nd Vice President but he was also: Author, Declaration of Independence, Founder of the University of Virginia, scientist, planter, and a true renaissance man of his era. Join Mark Haslinger, former designated presidential historian for the "A Broader Canon" book club of The Yale Club of New York City, for this engaging presentation on the man who is part of the history of our Village.
