Ken Knapp on Discovering our Regions Hidden Heritage: The pre-contact Native American History
The Thousand Islands-Upper St. Lawrence Valley and Eastern Lake Ontario Region is vast a coastal zone that stretches out to also include much of the Indian River Lakes and Black Lake areas. Discovering this Region’s Native history is to know and understand that the story of our regions Native American history is a story painted on the canvas of a coastal cultural landscape. In looking at the pre-contact Native past, all to often people and scholars alike do “miss the boat” of our Region’s coastal environment. While touching on what a cultural landscape is and why it matters, the discussion will cover this areas pre-contact history, some of the area’s Native sites, as well how they lived in this coastal zone but do so from the “view of a canoe”.
