This year BC Heritage Week's theme is "where do you find heritage?”. Our first reaction might be to look to our heritage buildings, heirlooms passed through the generations, and family stories, but less obvious is the heritage that informs how we talk about these things. Maybe your stories include trips to Cultus Lake or out to the salt chuck, complaints about the high muckamuck at work, or amazement at how that Skookum old building is still standing. Where do these peculiar words that make the way we talk unique come from and what do they really mean?
Join us for a talk from linguist and Chinook Jargon expert Dr. David Robertson, as he pulls back the curtain on the origin of some of our BCisms and place names. Come see how many of our unique terms not only in BC English, but also many of the Indigenous languages of British Columbia have been influenced by a time of rapid change and diversity.
