Deeper engagement with all societies is at the core of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. Every day, we see the power of museums to be vital components of this mission - inspiring inclusive, engaged communities, and helping to build ethical cultures embracing human rights, peace and democracy. In recent years, the International Council on Museums (ICOM) - which represents more than 44,000 museum workers in 138 countries around the world - has sought to refine its definition of a museum. As an Affiliated Organization of ICOM, we are committed to ensuring this is done with transparency and inclusivity.
To that end, the first webinar of our 2021 Conscience Matters series invites Sites of Conscience to share their perspectives and views on this important matter. The webinar will be introduced by Linda Norris, Senior Specialist of Methodology and Practice at the Coalition, and Diana Pardue, who is Director of the Museum Services Division at the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, a Site of Conscience in New York, as well as a member of the current ICOM Definition Committee. Together they will facilitate a dialogue among participants with the goal of identifying key words and themes that will be shared with ICOM and ideally included in the new definition.
