Title: Disaster by Choice: Why Disasters are Not Natural
Tuesday 19 May 2020 - 1pm BST
Description: Firestorms sweep across parts of Australia and a pandemic shuts down the world. We hear that nature runs rampant, seeking to destroy us through these 'natural disasters'. Yet disasters are not caused by the environment or nature. They are the consequences of human choices, values, and decisions in that we put ourselves in harm's way, we fail to take measures which we know would prevent disasters, and we stop people having the resources and opportunities to improve their situations. No matter what the environment does, we could prevent disasters, but we choose not to.
The talk will be followed by Moderated Q&A on Zoom.
The talk will also be livestreamed on Youtube: https://youtu.be/nqEszpJyiGQ and a recording will be available after the event.
