Breath. It is the missing pillar of health. No matter what we eat, how much we exercise, how strong we are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. Lung capacity is one of the greatest predictors of longevity and can be developed through proper breathing.
90% of us are breathing incorrectly and this is potentially causing or aggravating modern diseases. Breathing allows us to hack into our own nervous system, control our immune response and restore our health.
The biggest obstacle to your health and fitness is a rarely identified problem: chronic over-breathing. We can breathe two to three times more air than required without knowing it. Indications you are breathing through your mouth (during the day and night) are seeing your chest rise and fall as you breathe and snore.
Optimal breathing isn’t about oxygen per se. All healthy bodies are properly saturated with more than enough oxygen. It’s about carbon dioxide that needs to be present to push the oxygen out of the haemoglobin into the cells that need it.
The fix is easy: breathe less. But that is harder than it sounds. We have become conditioned to breathe too much, just as we eat too much. However, with some effort and training, breathing less can become an unconscious habit.
