Episode 3: Diabetes and food / African and Caribbean cuisines
Do you know your cassava from your yam? Do you know how much sugar is in a can of Supermalt? Not everyone from an African or Caribbean background will eat the foods mentioned above, but it would not be uncommon for traditional stews, porridges and other bread-based dishes to be featured in food diaries.

As such, a basic understanding of staple food items and drinks consumed across Africa and the Caribbean can be useful for healthcare professionals advising people living with diabetes.

In this episode, healthcare specialists and participants will review nutrition information for staple foods and drinks from Africa and the Caribbean. They will also discuss possible alternative to dishes high in carbohydrates, and the recent report on lower carbohydrate diets for adults with type 2 diabetes by the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN).
