Indigenous Health Services Providers Roundtable Discussion with BC's Ombudsperson

British Columbia's Ombudsperson, Jay Chalke, is hosting a series of Roundtable Events with Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Stakeholders across the Province.

At this Indigenous Health Services Providers Roundtable discussions will focus on how the BC Ombudsperson can:

(1) listen and learn about Indigenous service providers’ perspectives regarding the fairness of services provided by public bodies under the Ombudsperson’s jurisdiction;

(2) work effectively with Indigenous service providers to ensure Indigenous peoples are treated fairly when they receive services from the provincial government, local governments and other public bodies;

(3) ensure Indigenous individuals across the province are aware of the Ombudsperson’s services and know how to access our office if they have a complaint; and

(4) meet the diverse needs of Indigenous peoples in an Indigenous Communities Service Plan for the Office of the Ombudsperson, a plan that will set out the Ombudsperson’s commitments to working with Indigenous peoples and Indigenous service providers.

In addition to these stakeholder events, we will be holding Indigenous Round Table Events with Indigenous Peoples beginning in April. Invitations to the April sessions will be sent in early 2021.

At these sessions the Ombudsperson will:

(1) provide more information on what the Office of the Ombudsperson does and discuss how we can best help Indigenous peoples who are treated unfairly by provincial governments, local governments or other public bodies,

(2) discuss the notion of "fairness" from an Indigenous perspective; and

(3) discuss how the Office of the Ombudsperson can best support Indigenous peoples in achieving their self-governance goals by establishing fair governance structures and dispute resolution mechanisms.
