The Power of Belonging Series-Session 1: LGBTIQ
“We become ourselves through everyone else.” Wow! What a statement for today’s educational discussions. This is a quote from the famous educational theorist Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934). He also said, “social interaction is the origin and engine of learning.” These three courses will discuss what it means for a student to belong to their specific social group and for them to have the capacity, desire and permission to engage in social interactions in an educational setting. A foundational understanding of belonging as it applies to educational settings will be laid and applied to each of the following groups in three separate courses: LGBTIQ, immigrants, and students in poverty. After this learning experience, participants will be able to listen in order to take greater account of their students’ emotional well-being, fulfill the roles of teacher as person and as instructional leader, adopt teaching strategies that encourage positive social relationships, and assist in the development of student’s common interests with their peers.
